How to Create Devices and Targets
How It Works
UDP monitoring is useful for verifying the availability of web applications that provide voice or video services over the Internet using the User Datagram Protocol (UDP). Dotcom-Monitor checks UDP server availability by sending packets to a specified port and monitoring for a response.
After sending a UDP packet, the system waits up to 20 seconds for a response by default. In UDP monitoring, the absence of an error—such as no ICMP error message—is treated as a successful (OK) result, even if no explicit response is received from the target server.
Creating a Target
Once you have created a device and are adding or editing a UDP task, you will be prompted to adjust the following settings.
Server domain address or IP address.
Port
Enter the port number of the UDP service to test.
Time Validation Threshold (in seconds)
This setting specifies the maximum time (in seconds) that the system will wait for a response from the target resource. If the response is not received within the defined time, the task will be aborted with an OK response status.
The DNS Options feature allows users to choose how domain name server (DNS) requests are conducted during a monitoring task.
To specify the mode of resolving hostnames, in the DNS Resolve Mode section, select one of the available modes. For more details on the feature configuration, see DNS Mode Options.
The Custom DNS Hosts section allows to set up the mapping of IP addresses to hostnames. IPv6 and IPv4 DNS resolution is supported.
To specify the mapping, enter the IP address and the hostname in the corresponding fields.
