What is Digital Experience Monitoring?

In today’s ever-changing digital landscape, it’s critical for companies to be in sync with their users and customers. Once defined as End User Experience Monitoring (EUEM), Gartner updated the term in 2016 to Digital Experience Monitoring. The original framework, once made up of five separate dimensions, was updated that same year to include the following three dimensions:

  • Digital Experience Monitoring (DEM)
    • End-user or customer interaction with an application
  • Application Discovery, Tracing, and Diagnostics (ADTD)
    • Mapping transactions across multiple servers to find and remedy problems
  • Artificial intelligence for IT operations (AIOps) for applications
    • Using big data analytics, machine learning, and AI to resolve IT related problems

 

Digital Experience Monitoring: Areas of Focus

The real-world application of DEM focuses specifically on measuring and tracking the end user experience, known as real-time application monitoring, and consists of two components, passive and active monitoring.  Passive monitoring, also known as Real User Monitoring (RUM), captures data in the background as real users browse through pages.  On the other hand, active monitoring, also known as synthetic monitoring, does not rely on real users to produce data, like you would with RUM. Synthetic monitoring relies on creating scripts that simulate real user actions through a browser. Because synthetic monitoring doesn’t require real users to produce data, you can continually monitor applications and ensure real-time uptime, availability, and performance of your sites and applications – and get notified immediately the moment something goes wrong.
