Macro Recorder: An Automated Recording Process

The Dotcom-Monitor "Macro Recorder" tool provides a quick and easy process for setting up monitoring of web applications and transactions for both platforms. A Windows-based application similar to Internet Explorer, the Macro Recorder records all the events that are happening during a step-by-step re-enactment of the monitoring needed for a web application or transactional process. Essentially, the Macro Recorder automates the recording of web application and transaction re-enactments for monitoring purposes.

After the step-by-step re-enactment is recorded the Macro Recorder uploads the entire process to the Dotcom-Monitor service. Then, the Dotcom-Monitor service sends the step-by-step re-enactment to its worldwide monitoring locations. Finally, Dotcom-Monitor's worldwide monitoring agents replay the step-by-step re-enactment on the monitored web application or transaction. The monitoring agents replay the step-by-step re-enactment at a specific monitoring frequency and look for error conditions, such as: connectivity problems, content issues, performance slowdowns, "end-user experience" errors, and other custom error conditions set by the owner of the account.

If a problem is detected and confirmed Dotcom-Monitor immediately initiates a variety of specialized probes, including: a network trace route, DNS traces, webpage code capture, and a webpage screen shot capture. The results of these probes and alerts are sent to the account owner, and notification groups created by the account owner, as part of the alerting process.

The probes serve to quickly pinpoint potential root causes of the problem and get that information to designated on-call responders as soon as possible.

In addition to problem detection and error alerting processes, the collection of a wide variety of performance data is ongoing. This performance data is available in a variety of report formats, including: a real-time dashboard, text, Excel, graphical, online, and email.

Pricing

The pricing for web application and transaction monitoring is based on three factors: the platform used (UserView Monitoring™ or ServerView Monitoring™), the total number of monitored steps/tasks, and the frequency (1-minute or, 3, 5, 10, 15-minute) of monitoring.

For example, a Dotcom-Monitor account owner - an online toy parts manufacturer and seller - wants to monitor three different website transactions. The first transaction is a shopping cart process with eight steps, the second is an employee login on the website with three steps, and the third is a reseller login and ordering process with six steps. The overall number of monitored tasks is a total of 17 steps in the combined transactions. To monitor the eight steps of the online shopping cart for "user experience" issues at a frequency of 5-minutes using the UserView Monitoring™ platform, a "UserView Monitoring™ Premium I package" is recommended. To monitor the combined nine steps of the employee login and reseller login/order processes at a frequency of every 5 minutes using the ServerView Monitoring™ platform, "ServerView Monitoring™ Premium I package" is recommended.
